Temps are rising!
Tips for keeping your pup safe during the summer heat:
- Provide plenty of cool water and maybe even some cooling treats! Check out our yummy, dog-friendly ice cream recipe from Dog Appreciation Day.
- Remember pavement temperatures are MUCH hotter then air temperatures. Try keeping them in the grass for walks versus on sidewalks of blacktop.
- Never leave your dog in a hot car, even for a quick errand.
- Know breed specific care! From breathing problems to how to maintain coats, each breed is different.
- Keep your dog’s coat well-brushed, clean, and free of mats.
- Dogs do NOT sweat! It is important to know they do not regulate their body temperatures like humans.
- Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin, can get sunburned. Limit your dog’s sun exposure during the day and apply sunscreen to their ears, nose, and coat before going outside.
If you see any of the following symptoms, the dog needs rehydration and replacement of electrolytes right away:
- Panting
- Dry gums and nose
- Thick saliva
- Lethargy
- Sunken eyes
- Loss of elasticity in the skin
